FAQ

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
It is part of a employers responsibility due to Health and Safety Regulations 1999,the Workplace (Health,Safety and Wealthfare) Regulations 1992 and the Provisions and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

Can you carry out 110v PAT testing?

Yes our equipment is compatible with 110v appliances and equipment. This usually applies to building site equipment which uses three pin adapters.

Who does this apply to?
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 placed a legal responsibility on employers, suppliers and hirers etc to take reasonable steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of electrical equipment. This means all the portable appliance at your place of work have to be regularly tested to ensure they are safe to use.

Can anyone test items?
No,the legislation states that the person testing the item must be a competent person, ideally trained to city and guilds standard.

What does testing do to a IT system?
Since the early days of testing the test equipment which is used has been adopted to ensure that no damage can be done to equipment during the test process. In some work places where it is not possible to turn equipment off, such as computer rooms it may be only appropriate for a visual inspection and a full test at the next available time normally during a scheduled shutdown.

How long does it take?
This will depend on the number of items being tested and how accessible they are,a typical workstation with printer and extension lead will take 10 to 15 minutes to test and be working. If you have time and days that are best for you we will not charge you extra for out of hours working or weekends.

What happens if a item fails?
Most common failures are found on the visual check(i.e wrong fuse or blown fuse, wire damaged) these minor repairs will be fixed free of charge. Any faults that cannot be repaired the item will have to be taken out of service and fixed or replaced.

Do I have to keep records?
The guidelines are sketchy as to necessity of test records. We offer, as part of the Wright PAT testing service to keep your records on file or send you the results, you will receive a certificate on payment to say your PAT testing is up to date and contact you before your next test date is due so you do not have to worry.

Do I need to PAT test for insurance?
Some insurance companies do ask if you are up to date with your testing or wont give you cover without it,what most will do is ask for it if there was ever was a claim involving a PAT testable item i.e a serious injury or even a fire and not pay out on the claim.
